Almine Rech Monaco gallery hosts an exhibition of works by Irish artist Genieve Figgis, entitled ‘Drama Club’
It is wonderful when a gallery decides to host your work; it is a gorgeous feeling! To find that the place you have chosen is in the middle of hosting world-class events is quite another sensation. Yes, Monaco is very different; that said, it is probably a great time to showcase an artist’s exceptional work, as you never know who is ‘in town’ for the various events. So there, we have the predicament experienced by the lovely, and to me, joyous artist Genieve Figgis and her Drama Club exhibition.
Genieve’s work is interesting, so intriguing. It takes time to understand where she is coming from. I am not meaning ‘where’ in the literal sense, rather the ‘where’ in the artistic sense. At first you see something that is not constructed in the way normal figurative art is constructed, it has another dimension. That dimension is theatrical. Once you see the underlying sense of fun, the paintings come alive and, better, stay alive in your mind!

There is something fundamentally Irish about the paintings. There is a sense of wit, amusement and not taking things too seriously, something that the Irish are so brilliant at. Genieve brings you along in these happy, joyous, paintings that make you stop and, once seen, leave you with a great feeling that is repeated and accentuated with each viewing.
Genieve has had a formal, top-tier art education. She has drawn and built on that training to springboard her own, very unique style. And what a style! Genieve is much sought after, having had many exhibitions from New York City to China. She is no slouch – well, she is Irish!
Now she is exhibiting in Monaco. How do you see Genieve’s work? Well, amble along to Almine Rech Monaco, where her work will be on display until September.
Further information about the exhibition is available on the Almine Rech Monaco website.
