Whether you speak French or not, and if you enjoy good acting and being entertained, then I have two gems for you: Opéra Bastringue and Ciné-Guinguette!
I saw Ciné-Guinguette! when it was premiered in Villefranche some two years ago. Since then it has gone from strength to strength performing throughout France including Avignon and Paris. I am now looking forward to another dose in the coming weeks.
I had the pleasure of seeing Opéra Bastringue for the first time last weekend in the cutest little theatre in the depths of the old town of Nice, the small theatre space that is the Théâtre Francis Gag. It was a brilliant two-hander with Stéphanie Patout and Alexandre Lamia. As you may have guessed, it is all about opera, which is great, as Alexandre has an amazing operatic voice. It is also great fun whether you like opera or not. It has been playing to sell-out audiences for several months now.

There is more! Opéra Bastringue is available for private events of 20 to 40 people and they will work for the hat! Don’t let the fact that it is French turn you off at all, it is so likeable and so much fun that you will forget you don’t know the language! Besides, the opera snippets, sung beautifully by Alexandre, are not in French anyway. Definitely worth checking out for a theatre break or considering for something novel at an event.
Ciné-Guinguette! is another two-hander from brilliant performers: Sophie Chiara Viglio and Nicolas Carré. This is a bright and shiny musical that is bound to bring a smile to your face. The show, to me, is more akin to vaudeville than anything I have seen. The two leads bring their own magic and dynamism to the stage. The fact that it has sold out so many times is a pretty fair indication that it is excellent.

Both Stéphanie and Nicolas were in my movie Julia! – I had come across them at the late-lamented La Passerelle in the port of Nice, where they performed in several shows. They are consummate and very skilled actors.

If you can catch either show in one of the smaller theatres, then that will definitely add to the occasion!!
