Recently opened SAGA Cosmetics in Nice offers the most discerning fashionistas the best products at unbeatable prices!

As a modern woman I find that beauty always comes at a cost, and is pretty much always heavy on the wallet. How often have we cringed but indulged anyway in a new mascara that promises to lengthen, thicken, and even curl lashes in a few magical strokes? And how many times have you found yourself in the shower desperately rinsing and squeezing out the very last bit of your slightly over-priced shampoo whilst thinking “didn’t I buy this only a week ago?!”

Well here’s some good news, ladies! You’ll be able to stock up on mascara, shampoo, and whatever else floats your boat, without feeling the guilt of how much you’re spending on beauty products, thanks to the French Riviera’s latest addition to the high street: SAGA Cosmetics. 1999 saw the opening of the first SAGA store in Nantes, and due to its continued popularity and success counts up to 30 stores in the France Metropolitan area. It pretty much follows the same principal of the all too familiar hard discount supermarkets – selling only hair and beauty products.

The concept is quite simple – when you enter the store you will notice the shop divided in three sections: cosmetics/makeup, face/body care, and hair care. Just grab a shopping basket at the entrance and do your thing. SAGA has been working in close collaboration for the past ten years with some of the biggest names in the hair, beauty, and cosmetics industries like L’Oréal, Nivea, Gemey, Bourjois, Veet, and Schwarzkopf in order to make products accessible to everyone.

SAGA Cosmetique offers a wide range of mascaras

Just to give you a sneak peek into what to expect, you’ll find nail polish colours to suit your every mood and fancy from between 2-5€, or shampoos, hair masks, and shower gels from between 3-5€! A L’Oréal Volume Million de Cils Waterproof mascara will put you back a measly 7€ in place of the 15€ you’ll have to cough up in the hypermarkets, or highstreet retailers, which I’d say is a pretty significant saving! In addition to the better known brands, there are also a variety of other brands available to choose from such as: ESS,Yes One, and Yummy Body.

The only disadvantage (if you can call it that) is stock turnover tends to be quite rapid (for obvious reasons) and there are new products on the shelves every week, although not necessarily the same ones as the week before. My advice, if you see something you like, grab a couple to keep you going for a while.

If you’re a little suspicious (as I was at first) about the idea of hard discount cosmetics and how SAGA is able to sell certain brands at such low prices, this should put your mind at ease – the chain is able to do this simply due to surplus production, end-of-season destocking, changes made to images/design on packaging, and the absence of intermediaries, but never at the expense of quality.
