Born in 1987, Charline Bourcier is a French visual artist and associate professor based in the south of France. In 2015, she completed her doctoral thesis Les dislocations de l’espace pictural (The Dislocations of Pictorial Space) under the supervision of Khalil M’Rabet.

Her work explores the societal and environmental issues that challenge our current systems of thought and ways of living. In her paintings, the viewer’s gaze is drawn into a mise en abyme, created by compositions structured around multiple, interwoven scenes. Through unsettling imagery and striking juxtapositions, she generates unexpected associations rich with meaning.

Bourcier’s practice is rooted in figuration, yet transformed by processes of alteration—dripping, rubbing, covering, and at times leaving areas deliberately unfinished. This act of alteration is not destructive but transformative, reshaping the image to reveal new possibilities.

Her charcoal drawings carry the same logic: erasure, sudden apparitions, and dissonant associations that unsettle the viewer and invite reflection. In the exhibition at Villa Cameline, her drawings and paintings will inhabit the rooms of the villa, leading visitors through dreamlike fictions. Scenes of the underwater world and nocturnal landscapes evoke memories of places both real and imagined, including Villa Cameline itself.

The exhibition Fictions Oniriques by Charline Bourcier runs at la Maison Abandonnée (Villa Cameline) from 13th September to the 18th October, 2025. The vernissage takes place at 6pm on Friday, 12th September. Open Wednesday and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Special night opening on Thursday 25th September and 9th October from 6 – 10pm.

Located in the heart of Nice, the Maison Abandonnée [Villa Cameline] is a private space, unique in France, that has been inviting artists to present their work for over 20 years. Built at the beginning of the last century in the pure style of Belle Epoque villas and surrounded by a vast, luxuriant garden, it was abandoned for around fifteen years. The vocation of the Maison Abandonnée is to encourage different forms of contemporary creation through the presentation of temporary exhibitions, while promoting emerging creation. Artists are invited to explore the diversity of artistic research fields, the aim being to provoke and offer experiences of art through the diversity of approaches and practices.
