‘The Great Gatsby’, starring Leonardo di Caprio, has been confirmed as the opening film for the 2013 Festival de Cannes.

The 66th Cannes Film Festival will be officially opened with Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, ‘The Great Gatsby‘, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Joel Edgerton. The festival starts on Wednesday, the 15th May, and the movie will be shown in the Grand Théâtre Lumière of the Palais des Festivals that evening.

It is a great honor for all those who have worked on ‘The Great Gatsby‘ to open the Cannes Film Festival“, said Australian director Luhrmann. “We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film ‘Strictly Ballroom‘ was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside Saint-Raphaël.”

Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby

DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, the mysterious millionaire, known for his extravagant parties, and Tobey Maguire is Nick Carraway, the WW1 veteran who rents a small house next door to the Gatsby estate, and narrates the tale.

The opening night will also feature Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, as well as the American rapper, Jay-Z.

The movie will be shown in 3D, only the second time that this has happened in Cannes, and it will go on general release throughout France and internationally on the same day. The film was supposed to be released last Christmas, but Warner Bros. decided to hold back its release to ensure it “reaches the largest audience possible”.
