To celebrate its 30-year milestone in style, the region’s annual summer festival will set stages ablaze with the rhythms of samba and Nordeste music.
Another summer, another round of Soirées Estivales: the Alpes-Maritimes’ flagship event is underway, bringing art and culture to the traditional venues in the big coastal towns but also most remote corners of the region. Through 31 August, an eclectic lineup blends music, theatre, dance, comedy, circus, magic, and live performance for all audiences, and presents longtime favourites alongside new talents. The 31st edition promises to be bigger and better than ever, with Brazil as the flagbearer.
Numbers don’t lie, it is said. 30 years since its creation, 450 shows across 150 municipalities, with 1,500 artists and technicians, 99% of them local, entertaining 3 million visitors so far. That may sound dry on paper but it tells the extraordinary success story of a modest local festival that has grown into the most anticipated summer event of the department. And one more impressive figure: admission fee, and has always been, €0. That’s right – every single event is free.

Dissecting such a monumental programme and picking our recommendations is a nigh impossible task. We will therefore rather focus on the perennial fan favourites, and leave the pleasure of discovering familiar artists, or maybe new ones, to our readers. Les Soirées Jazz at Lympia, held weekly from 16 July to 20 August, transforms the rooftop terrace of the Lympia cultural centre next to the port of Nice into an open-air jazz club. A refined programme in an exceptional setting overlooking the Mediterranean turns regular Thursday evenings into those memorable events that define a whole summer.

Les Folies des Lacs, on 19 July from 12pm to 5:30pm at La Colmiane, hosts a festive, music-filled day infused with the spirit of Brazil. Set against the magnificent landscapes of the Mercantour, and by the shores of Lac de La Colmiane, a lively musical programme unites two cultures in a warm and convivial atmosphere.
Le Festival des Mots, a celebration of literature and the French language, runs from 17 July to 8 August across eight locations. Perfect for Francophiles, this unique literary journey is brought to life by acclaimed actors including Raphaël Quenard, Valérie Bonneton, Lionnel Astier, and Alice Pol.
With its unique blend of accessibility and ambition, the Soirées éstivales remain proof that culture need not come with a price tag, or a dress code.
