Villefranche Gets Ready to Rock Peace One Day

To celebrate Peace One Day this September, the town of Villefranche-sur-Mer is getting in on the act with a concert in the Théatre de Verdure.

Peace One Day is a non-profit organisation, set up to raise awareness about the UN International Day of Peace that occurs on the 21st September each year. The objective of the organisation is to foster Peace Day as “a day for wide-scale community action, and a day for UN agencies and aid organisations to safely carry out life-saving work.”

Started in 1999 by Jeremy Gilley, a British actor and filmmaker, the original idea was to establish a single day when all countries observed a day of worldwide ceasefire and non-violence. He succeeded in getting the UN to pass Resolution 55/282, which was unanimously approved by all members States on 7th September, 2001.

The first Peace Days passed relatively uneventfully, and it was only in 2006 that the first “life-saving activities” took place on the 21st of September.

Peace One Day has gone from strength to strength over the years, counting many high profile celebrities and personalities amongst its supporters and ambassadors. This year, stars like Eddie Izzard, Sir Michael Caine, Jude Law and Imelda May have all lent their voices to the campaign. There will also be an historic concert held in The Hague, to celebrate the centenary of the Peace Palace (home of the International Court of Justice).

Not to be outdone, and of course to help celebrate Peace Day, the city fathers in Villefranche have also organised a concert, to be held in the Théâtre de Verdure in the Citadel. The concert starts at 6pm and will feature acts such as Pablo/Tony, Janis et les Slybarts, Mark Ashton Project, Jus d’Orange and Korrigan.
