Once mildly mocked as an American Hallmark holiday, Halloween now has France firmly in its grip. And ever the avant-gardist, Nice has embraced it with open arms. But forget trick & treating – if you want to break out your costumes and disguises, the movies are the place to show them off.

To celebrate the occasion, the Jean-Paul Belmondo cinema on place Garibaldi is transformed into a veritable temple of fantasy on October 31. Across three rooms with a unique atmosphere between dreams, fear and magic, spectators can (re)discover the masterpieces of Gothic maestro Tim Burton or get the frissons in the mysterious theatre 3, reserved only for the bravest.

The day starts early: At 1:30 pm, a haunted house with a bewitching atmosphere opens its doors, offering an animated welcome, make-up for children and adults, and free popcorn and sweets at each screening.

The lineup is a tribute to Tim Burton and eight of his masterpieces with different themes. Decked out in goth-chic, Theatres 1 and 2 offer screenings that are generally family-friendly, although some age restrictions apply due to public ratings. Theatre 3 is exclusively reserved for those over 16. Note that unless otherwise marked, films are in French.

4:00 p.m. – Beetlejuice (age 12 and up)

6:00 p.m. – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (age 12 and up)
