Why open a shop specialising in British and international foods in France – the homeland of gastronomy itself?

‘Because it’s a taste of home’ says Caroline Brittain, owner of Brittain’s Store and Freezer Centre in Valbonne. ‘For many, moving to this part of the world is a dream, for some it’s a corporate move and for some it’s just a second home with better weather’, says Caroline, ‘But when they are here, everyone likes to keep in touch with their roots and their culture and believe me, Crème Anglaise doesn’t even come close to proper British custard’.

Brittain’s Store has been open for over 10 years but the Freezer Centre is a new departure, driven by customer demand for food that is convenient and that offers great value for money. The Freezer Centre has only been open for 3 months but already has a loyal following from customers seeking cuisines that are difficult to find in France. Authentic Chinese and Indian dishes are among the most popular sellers along with – would you believe it – New World Wines.

It’s hard to imagine that in an area surrounded by vineyards and delicious, affordable wines that the South African Sauvignon and the Australian Chardonnay are flying off the shelves, but that’s the case. It’s less difficult to imagine that cases of British beers are popular with customers seeking a more authentic taste than some of the more manufactured European lagers.

The Freezer Centre is open from Tuesday – Saturday, stock up the freezer with great food at great value.
