Local Artist Karen Joubert Makes Donation to MAMAC

Discover the works of local artist Karen at an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art and Contemporary Art in Nice this September.

Karen Joubert has been living and working as an artist in Roquefort-les-Pins for the last 25 years.

Born in 1954 to an American mother and a French father who worked as a Commissioner onboard transatlantic liners, Karen had an extraordinary childhood. From California to Le Havre, she met numerous celebrities and stayed in the most luxurious hotels. This extravagant life was instrumental not only in the development of her character, but also of her art.

After studying at the Académie Charpentier, she married a young Thai artist, falling in love with his country and its tropical landscapes. She later meets the art collector Daniel Cordier, who is on a quest to unearth talent often ignored by the critics. He includes two of her works in a donation of 500 pieces that he makes to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Both works are now on loan to the Abattoirs in Toulouse.

Karen has a preference for large format works, each painting taking anywhere from six months to a year to complete. This year, she decided to donate a series of paintings, ten in total, to MAMAC and the City of Nice, which are the subject of this exhibition.

The Vernissage takes place Thursday, 4th September at 7pm in MAMAC (3rd floor) in the presence of the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi and the artist herself. The exhibition runs from Friday, 5th September until Sunday, 12th October, 2014. Admission is free.
