Messner Mountain Museum Extends Invitation to all Photography Enthusiasts

Seeing the mountains definitely makes one happy. So, it’s not surprising that South Tyrol, Italy’s northernmost province (also known as Alto Adige or Südtirol) is at the top of many people’s list of holiday destinations. In recent years, I too have also travelled here several times – truly one of my happy places and second only to the coast!

One side-excursion that is definitely recommended when visiting the area: the Messner Mountain Museum – a series of museums spread out over six locations in the region.

Reinhold Messner, icon of extreme mountaineering and the spirit of adventure, radiates a very special presence. His extraordinary achievements, his striking appearance – robust yet elegant – make him an inspiration and a bridge between worlds.

Well-known in the world of extreme sports and the general public alike, his stories tell of perseverance, determination and overcoming limits, as well as the power to stop and turn back, to protect lives and enable safer subsequent attempts.

Even outside the world of mountaineering, people associate him with respect and symbiosis with nature. This characterises him, as does the desire for adventure.

The Messner Mountain Museum is looking for photographic talent – be they professional photographers or amateur.

The world of the mountain fascinates, inspires and tells stories. The six Messner Mountain Museums are places where these stories can be seen and experienced.

Whether dramatic panoramas and architectural shots, tranquil interiors or special details, MMM is looking for the most impressive photos that showcase the six museums and their breathtaking scenery. Photographs that capture the atmosphere and uniqueness of these extraordinary places.

Everyone is invited, from professionals to ambitious amateur photographers alike. The decisive factor is not the equipment, but the eye for the moment.

The winning images will become part of MMM’s new visual identity and will be featured on the MMM channels. They will also be presented as part of an exhibition at MMM Firmian.

The award ceremony for the best photos will take place at the end of the 2025 museum season at Sigmundskron Castle (MMM Firmian), with Swiss photographer Thomas Biasotto in attendance. The competition is open to all.

The three best entries will each win one of the following prizes:

The overall winner will have first choice of one of the three prizes, the runner-up will choose one of the two remaining prizes, and the final prize will be awarded to the third place winner.
