The SNCF announces the introduction of Ouigo, budget priced tickets on select TGV routes from Paris to the South of France.

Following in the footsteps of Air France’s recent decision to offer reduced airfares, the SNCF has followed suit with the introduction of Ouigo, their new budget priced ticket. This new fare will be available as of the 2nd April 2013, and will operate on routes from Marne-la-Vallée Chessy station in Paris to Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Lyon St Exupéry, Marseilles, Montpellier, Nîmes, and Valence.

Initially, three return services a day are proposed, with four available on Sundays. The ticket price will depend on the level of demand, but prices in the region of €10 to €85 have been mooted.

The trains will comprise recently refurbished double-deck carriages, and as this is a budget ticket, there is limited room for baggage on board, no bar service, but there will be snacks available.

You will also need to pay €2 for the socket for your laptop or other devices when booking. If you wish to take additonal baggage with you, it will cost €5 if you check this option when checking in online. Otherwise, you will be liable to pay up to €40 if you arrive with extra bags at check-in. All sounds a bit too like Ryanair!
