Hollywood heavyweight Leonardo DiCaprio to be honoured by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco’s Foundation for his outstanding actions for the preservation of our planet

Known for his passionate engagement for environmental causes, it comes as no surprise that Academy Award-winning actor, environmental activist and U.N. Messenger of Peace Leonardo DiCaprio will be the guest of honour at the inaugural Monte-Carlo Gala pour l’Océan on September 28, 2017. Presided by Prince Albert II of Monaco, hosted by Global Fundraising Chairman Milutin Gatsby, and bound to become the new highlight of the annual Monaco Yacht Show, the gala has been created around a live auction, offering once-in-a-lifetime experiences, collectibles and memorabilia, and a selection of fine art from some of the world’s most important artists, with proceeds going to FPA2, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s initiatives in favour of a sustainable global ocean.

The American actor – star of Titanic, The Revenant, and the Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve sequel – is not the only Hollywood A-lister though to support the Principality’s ongoing efforts. Uma Thurman, Goldie Hawn, Andy Garcia, Kevin Spacey, Eva Longoria, Madonna, Joe Pesci, Martin Scorsese, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tobey Maguire, Enric Sala and Terry Tamminen – all equally committed to the health of our planet and its oceans – will serve as event chairs for the auction.

Both Prince Albert II and Leonardo DiCaprio are founders and leaders of powerful foundations, drawing global awareness to the precarious state of terrestrial and maritime environments and raising funds for related causes. While the monarch of the Principality is frequently found doing hands-on conservation work in the four corners of the world, DiCaprio leverages his considerable influence to lobby international organizations and institution like the UN. In 2016 he produced “Before the Flood”,  a documentary that has since become sadly prophetic in view of the recent floods caused by hurricanes in the United States.

Representing more than 70% of the planet’s surface and 97% of the biosphere, the global ocean plays a key role in climate regulation, producing 50% of the oxygen we breathe and absorbing 25% of the carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. With this in mind, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has clearly positioned the global ocean among its top priorities since its inception in 2006. The Foundation’s activities include efforts to better understand the environmental dangers to which our ocean is exposed, fight against plastic pollution, strengthen and develop marine protected areas, conserve endangered species, and promote innovative solutions for a sustainable oceanic environment.
