Why Coffee is So Much More than Just a Drink

Coffee keeps the world going around!

Explore the rituals of coffee and how it connects us in daily life, while experiencing the emotional lift of that perfect cup.

Getting up in the morning is always a delicate affair. Everyone greets the day in their own way. For some, it only truly begins after the third snooze; for others, with a run at dawn. For me, there are two unwavering constants: my dachshund Heini and the anticipation of that first, perfect cup of coffee.

Many of us need that little morning spark to really rise. And I am certainly not alone in my devotion to the daily wake-up ritual. Coffee is more than just a black drink. It is ritual, atmosphere, emotion. And no, it’s not about a fleeting caffeine rush – it’s about a gentle, positive lift. The scent of freshly ground beans filling the apartment. First dates in cafés, catch-ups with friends, or short pauses with colleagues. Coffee connects us. It may just be the smallest common denominator of everyday life.

As universal as coffee is, everyone has their own way of celebrating it. How much life can one cup really hold?

Perhaps that is why coffee feels so personal. Our order reveals something about us – our pace, our preferences, our need for comfort or clarity. The minimalist espresso drinker, the oat-milk latte devotee, the slow-brew purist: each cup tells a quiet story. In a world that moves fast, coffee allows us to choose our rhythm, if only for a moment.

France: Where Breakfast is an Attitude

In France, the day traditionally starts with a café au lait: equal parts coffee – from a French press or a robust espresso – and hot milk. It’s classically served in a wide bowl, the bol, into which a croissant can be dipped with delight.

The French press, a staple of home brewing, embodies French coffee culture: coarsely ground beans, hot water, a moment of patience  – then the plunger slowly pressed down. No over-engineered gadgets, no rush. Coffee is to be savoured, not perfected.

In cafés, espresso from the machine reigns supreme.

Monaco: a Principality Pleasure with Magnificent Views

In Monaco, French nonchalance meets Italian intensity. Coffee here is enjoyed slowly, stylishly, maybe even with a view of the casino. It is not merely a drink, but part of a lifestyle that celebrates time, aesthetics, and enjoyment.

On hot days, the café frappé is a favourite – shaken, chilled coffee that combines refreshment with elegance. Though it originated in Greece, it is now an integral part of Mediterranean coffee culture, cherished across Monaco, France, and Italy alike.

Italy: Intensity with Perfection

Italy, meanwhile, offers something both similar and entirely unique. Here, coffee is almost an art form. It’s not about quantity, but concentration and precision. About intensity.

Espresso is the heart of Italian coffee culture. Hot water is pressed through finely ground beans under high pressure, topped with a dense crema. Around that a centimetre of fine milk foam is poured to rest gently on the crema, creating a delicate brown edge. From this emerge cappuccino, caffè latte, and other morning classics. Milk-based coffees are reserved for breakfast, often accompanied by a sweet cornetto.

Afterwards, espresso takes centre stage: small, strong, hot, consumed in a few quick sips, often standing at the bar. This brief pause is firmly rooted in daily life. One stops, savours, and moves on. The unspoken rules of Italian coffee reflect the country’s spirit: style, tradition, and community, all in a single cup.
