Pink Ribbon Monaco are holding their second annual walk in the Principality this March to help raise awareness about breast cancer.
Sunday, the 17th of March is St. Patrick’s Day. The world over, people will celebrate the patron saint of Ireland by wearing green, but if you are in Monaco, don’t be too surprised to see women, as well as hopefully a few men, wearing pink t-shirts, wigs or boas instead.
For the second year running, Pink Ribbon Monaco, a non-profit organization created in 2011 to help raise awareness about breast cancer, is organizing its annual Pink Ribbon Walk. In 2012, despite the rain, about 300 participants took to the pavement to remember those who lost the fight with breast cancer, to honour survivors, and to raise money in a fun way. This year, the organizers are hoping for an even bigger turn out.
The money raised will help fund a spectroscopy scanner, an innovative and state of the art screening and post therapy follow-up device for use at the newly completed breast cancer screening centre of the Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace (work starting March 2013).
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, comprising 16% of all female cancers. When detected at an early stage, it can usually be cured, but the chances of survival decrease rapidly as the tumour spreads. It is for this reason that information and early detection can save lives.
The event will start at 9:45am on port Hercule, shortly after the end of the Monaco 10km race. Last year, the 3km circuit took the participants from the port to the Fontvieille district. This year, the course is 4.5 km long and will pass in front of the Palace, the Cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum.
As a medical certificate is not required to participate, you really do not have any excuse not to get up early and participate in this great charity event. Registration for the Pink Ribbon Monaco Walk is €30, and you may register on the Fédération Monégasque d’Athletisme website.
