While the likes of John Galliano, Jeremy Scott and Guy Laroche basked in the bareness on their catwalks, Kenzo and Miu Miu proffered a more modest approach opting to drape models in swaths of flowing fabric and fur for voluminous coverage. Placing oversized, masculine coats and blazers over bandeaus elevated the looks from scandalous to stylish.
DKNY and Edun opted for more athletic collections with sportswear bandeaus perfect for promenading down the Riviera coastline. Lightweight anoraks, long fisherman’s vests and cargos accompanied Edun’s springtime looks, while DKNY paired its bare bras with lightweight athletic jackets and luxe track pants. Models bedecked in baseball caps, leather fanny packs and pointy-toed, high-top sneakers brought forth images of tennis played over Limoncello at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.
Marc Jacobs’ mistresses of mod exposed their midriffs at Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs. French darlings Chloé and Carven teased show goers with slight hints of skin. And Michael Kors, always the epitome of American sportswear, presented naked navels along with rugby stripes and colour-blocked frocks.
Balenciaga’s boxy crop tops will line many a lovely lady’s closet and the slices of stomach glimpsed at Rochas remained demure yet quirky – very Zanini. Jean Paul Gaultier ensured those who idolize pop stars of days past can dress their best in the full on Madonna circa 1985, though, unfortunately, his bra tops come cone-less.
