The Mairie de Cannes recently unveiled the Summer programme of events taking place in the city over the coming months.
Cannes is not just about the Film Festival, it is oh so much more than that, and the summer programme just announced by the City Fathers is perfect proof of this.
The programme for Été à Cannes is chock-full of great festivals, exhibitions, and perennial events, with a wide and varied selection to appeal to both locals and tourists alike.
So, here are our top picks for your 2016 Summer in Cannes…
AILEY II
9th July, 2016 (9pm)
Master choreographer Alvin Ailey’s name lives on with Ailey II, a company set up in 1974 that has merged the spirit and energy of the best young dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s most outstanding emerging choreographers. Ailey II presents an evening of contemporary dance, with four pieces – In & Out, Gêmeos, Something Tangible, and I am the Road at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrés.
LE MUSÉE ÉPHÉMÈRE DU CINÉMA
13th July to 25th August, 2016
Oscar-winning French director Michel Gondry runs this amateur film factory, where visitors get the chance to make their own movie in just three hours in a specially designed studio. With a maximum of 15 people per group, you are guaranteed to learn something new about le septième art. Takes place in the Espace Riviera in the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. Admission is free.
FESTIVAL d’ART PYROTECHNIQUE DE CANNES
14th, 21st & 29th July | 7th, 15th, & 24th August, 2016
The annual fireworks displays are back as part of the summer of fun in Cannes, with entries from Mexico, Italy, Australia, Finland, the Czech Republic, and France. All the action takes place in the Baie de Cannes, and admission is free!
NUITS MUSICALES DU SUQUET
18th to 23rd July, 2016
One of the most loved classical music events in the region, the Nuits Musicales du Suquet has featured the greatest international soloists and chamber music ensembles over its 40 year existence. Appearing this summer we have Francis HUSTER & Giovanni BELLUCCI, the Orchestre de Cannes with Misha Katz (musical direction) and Timur Sergeyenia (piano), the Orchestre Franz Liszt de Budapest with pianist François Dumont, Bruce Brubaker, and a night entitled Passion Guitares. All concerts take place at the Parvis de l’eglise Notre-Dame d’Espérance.
HOMMAGE À MAÏA PLISSETSKAÏA
31st July, 2016 (9pm)
The Prix Ballet2000 will pay tribute to the great Russian ballerina Maia Plissetskaïa with this prestigious international dance gala, bringing together the stars and soloists of some of the greatest ballet companies in the world. The programme will feature solos, pas de deux and extracts from ballets. An evening full of excellent dancing and emotion is guaranteed.
JAZZ À DOMERGUE
11th to 14th August, 2016
Taking place in the magnificent gardens of the Villa Domergue, this is truly the perfect setting in which to enjoy an evening of the best of French and international jazz. Artists confirmed for the 2016 event include Raphaël Imbert and Karol Beffa, Éric Séva, the Laurent Coulondre Trio, and Marjorie Barnes & Equinox.
Festival Pantiero
19th and 20th August, 2016
The Baie de Cannes will be rocking once again this August with the return of Festival Pantiero. Taking place adjacent to the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, this festival is always a crowd pleaser. This year we can look forward to seeing La Femme, Jessica 93, and Grand Blanc strutting their stuff.
FESTIVAL DE L’ART RUSSE
23rd to 27th August, 2016
This is the 19th edition of the festival, celebrating all aspects of Russian art and culture. There will be exhibitions, an evening of folk dancing, ballet, cinema, concerts, and more.
Alongside the above events, there is a very full programme on offer throughout the summer months, from June through August. The full chronological breakdown is available on the Cannes Tourist Office website.
